A couple things that might have been overlooked...

First, we all know J.K. Rowling finished Harry Potter, but of even greater importance, [info]somniesperus (Telanu) finished THE TEA SERIES (you need to go through her website to get to it, but it's not hard to find). YAY! I've been reading this fanfic for years, almost as long as I've been reading the books themselves, and I'm so happy it's finished! A little sad, too. VERY satisfying ending. For me, and a lot of people, The Tea Series is the definitive Snape/Harry, and it absolutely remains my favorite.

Switching to SPN now, Kripke reassures fandom. WHEW! I wasn't worried worried, but it's nice to know that the producers haven't lost their minds. And how cool that he's so in touch with his fanbase! :) (Warning: SPN S3 spoilers, so don't click the link if you're keeping yourself pure.)

Went and saw OotP with my brother this afternoon. I actually really liked it.

But first things first.

The preview for The Dark is Rising movie made me CAPSLOCK WITH RAGE.

First, why? Why would they fuck with the books that badly? What possible reason could they have? It's not like movies about asexual eleven year old British kids do poorly or something! Why did they add a romance? Why did they add Super! Awesome! Magic!? Why did they make Will a whiny bitch? And why, for the love of all that's holy, did they set the thing in Santa Cruz?

For all that movie has in common with the books, they could have just changed the character names and a few details and billed it as a completely different thing. Then my soul wouldn't be broken.

::weeps::

Sorry, I'm going to need a moment to compose myself.

While you're waiting, click for OotP movie spoilers. )

I had the chance to read through the Harry Potter books when I with Grandma at the hospital. I thought the reason I liked books 1-3 best was because I read them as a child/young teen. Turns out that no, books 1-3 are (IMHO) far better than books 4-6, even reading them as an adult. And book six still sucks. (Although book 5 is still my least favorite. I couldn't even get through it...I kept skimming it.)

I've been reading a lot of HP fanfic, some old Snape/Harry, a little Snape/Lupin. There is a Snape/Draco story I read years ago and can't find....it's quite long, and follows their relationship from before Draco was born. IIRC, Draco was physically weak, a lot of allergies and asthma, and maybe he was part Veela? (Although I could be mixing two fic, there.) Anyway, I want to find it, and I can't. It probably isn't as good as I remembered, though.

I wrote a really long, really bad Harry/Draco fic six years ago. A friend of mine had a copy and loved it, and out of the blue, asked if I was going to finish it. Now I stopped liking H/D years ago and it's been sitting abandoned on my harddrive since then. So I opened it up, just to see what I could do with it, and OH MY GOD. It is such a peice of shit. It is a cliched, tear-soaked, sappy mess. The thought of re-writing it to make it presentable makes me a little sick, so it's just going to have to remain unfinished.

Whew.

I go under in 13 hours. Not that I'm, you know, nervous or anything. :)

I've been reading a lot of old school Snape/Harry. All stuff I've read before. I'm not interested in writing more HP fanfic--every plot idea ever has been written, and far better than I ever could--but I do like reading it. It's like being with an old friend, wrapped in a blanket of gay porn.

Also, and completely apropos of nothing, I hate Metallica with the burning fire of a thousand suns. Of course, my brothers LOVE Metallica. Guess what's blaring through the house right now? YUCK. Unfortunately, James Hetfield (Metallica frontman) lives fairly close to our house and shops at the grocery store around the corner from us. My brother is like a crazy stalker. Everytime he sees James or his car, he stops whatever he's doing and points like a demented thing, and screams JAMES! OMG IT'S JAMES HETFIELD. OMG OMG!!! It was funny the first time, but now it's just pathetic. Especially because Metallica sucks.

PS: The Dar Williams remake of Comfortably Numb is super awesome. I've been listening to it all day.

(Disclaimer: I'm not active enough in the Harry Potter fandom to be directly affected by this, or even understand this.)

1st thought: Wow, some people have way too much time on their hands. This is not directed solely at [info]msscribe.

2nd thought: Wow, that is some pathological bullshit. Again, not solely directed at [info]msscribe.

3rd thought: Why is Harry Potter fandom so fucked up? [info]sistermagpie pointed me to a Ursula Le Guin interview where she calls Harry Potter "ethically rather mean-spirited." (Scroll down a ways to see it.) I don't know if you can blame the dubious ethics of the Harry Potter books for its batshit fans, but I figure J.K. Rowling is as good a person to blame as any. Hell, we could have avoided the whole problem if Harry and Snape ran off together in book 6.

4th thought: Fandom_Wank is really not funny anymore. Seriously, read through the whole thing. Notice how many time f_w comes up, shit-stirring and basically making what could have been a small, private matter a huge wanky thing.

5th thought: Fandom has basically regressed to the seventh grade. Is anyone else strongly reminded of the girl's bathroom in Jr. High? I can practically smell the cheap hair product and fruity body sprays.

Edit: I mentioned this whole thing to my mom, condensed of course because she's not active in fandom. She stared at me for a couple minutes, then said, slowly, "See honey, this is why gossip is bad." She wanted to use this a sermon illustration, but realized it couldn't possibly be compressed. :)

Easter break starts tomorrow! I'm going to stay with a friend's family, so it should be cool. I won't have internet access, though, so don't do anything fun while I'm gone. ;)

I'm going to have quite a lot of quiet time, so I hope to get some fic written. You're probably not interested, but here's what I'm working on in order of priority:

1) [BSC] Kristy/Mary Anne for comeoneileen.

2) [BSC] End of my Kristy/Dawn trilogy.

3) [Animorphs] Tobias/Ax epic. It keeps growing in scope, and Ax keeps pulling shit that he really shouldn't, while Tobias keeps sinking further into boring Emo-world. ::pout::

4) Southpark/Harry Potter crossover. No pairings. Just something I play with when I get bored. Will be posted to ff.net and updated whenever I feel like it.

1. List five of your fandoms.
2. Ask your friends list which character in each fandom they think you're most like.
3. Do the same when/if your friends post this on their LJ.

Five Fandoms

- Animorphs
- Star Trek (TOS-VOY)
- Baby-Sitter's Club
- Digimon (01-Tamers)
- Harry Potter

Also, a random thought for the day: I've decided that the Marauders are basically the South Park kids. Cartmen is Peter, Kenny is Remus, James is Stan, Sirius is Kyle, and Wendy is Lily. I now want to write a crackfic crossover where they're all drawn Japanese dojinshi style.

While looking over the fanfic saved on my hard drive, I quickly realized that I have a lot of fic saved that, if looking at it from my normal way of critiquing fanfic, really sucks. I mean, some of my favorite fics are desperately out of character, badly written, horribly cliche, etc.

But I still love them.

So, for your reading pleasure, I present some of my favorite fics that really shouldn't be. These fics all have something seriously wrong with them, but have still managed to hold a special place in my heart. Enjoy.

Yes, I should be working on my NaNoWriMo story, but I'm procrastinating. I cleaned up the fanfiction section in my memories to make it easier to navigate, and tagged most of my entries. Ah, the lengths one will go to in order to keep from actually doing something productive.

Just got back from the Harry Potter movie.

I took five kids to the movie, all of whom were under the age of ten (and the youngest was 4). Of course, three of them had to go to the bathroom during the movie. Then I spent the last part of the movie with a four year old on my lap, from the graveyard on. I told his mom that the movie was going to be scary. "Oh, he'll be fine," she insisted, practically shoving him out the door. Yeah. Right. But then, I guess if I had three kids I'd want to unload them if I had the chance.

Onto the spoiler-y comments.

Recollections of the parts of the movie I did see. )

I do want to see the movie again. After all, I missed three big parts (most of the second task, first half of the ball, and the last five minutes or so). ::shrug:: That's what I get for volunteering to take my little brother and a friend...I should know that before long, I'll end up with a load of kids. Wish I could be more of a bitch and say no.

I'm going to wait a month or so to see it again, and then I'll go really late at night with someone who won't mind chatter during the movie. Jesse knows what I'm talking about. :) Nothing like watching the movie with a slashy commentary running through.

HAHAHAHAHA!

A ramble, a rant, a rec...

So I've discovered I like Lucius/Harry, a pairing that a month ago was firmly in the "ick" category. Snarry has ruined me forever. I've decided not to analyze my enjoyment of cross-generation pairings, but it's something to bring up with the therapist if I run out of things to talk about. I've spent the last week or so hunting good LM/HP fic, and...it's not really out there. I've found a couple I like (especially the Alluette series by Nimori ).

The rant: Why do people insist on making Lucius a nice guy? And I don't even mean nice in the "he joined Dumbeldore" sense because I'm sure there are instances where that would happen. I'm thinking more the "oh look he's cuddling Harry and whispering sweet nothings" type nice, and when it happens without any sort of buildup or reasoning beyond great sex it ruins what might have otherwise been a good story.

I find this a lot in Snarry writing as well (H/D of course is the biggest perp. in the unwarranted sap department). The story is going along just fine, pretty in character, until all of a sudden Snape starts holding Harry and patting his hair and telling him of his eternal longing and how he always wished this day would come and he just wants to *protect* Harry...and I'm asking "Where the hell did that come from?"

Look, if you want to write sap, there are plenty of pairings for it. Harry/Ginny, for example. Want slash? Ron/Harry. Cross-gen? Harry/Remus. Tonks/Ginny. Slash the good guys if you want good-guy slash, or at least give a decent explanation for why Snape is calling Harry "honey".

Hmmm. Another HP/LM that I just read and found absolutely delicious is A World Not So Black Nor White by Amanuensis Gah. I like this because there's a progression to the romance, and Lucius is still Lucius. Plus, her command of language is amazing.

Off to get perved. Bye.
